Specialist School Information

Blakebrook, Specialist Status for Communication and Interaction

Our Specialist Status was awarded in September 2007 in recognition of our leading practice in Communication and Interaction and to enable us to continue to raise standards through a School Plan and a Community Plan.

The Specialist Status has given us additional resources to build our 'Family Communication Centre' and to purchase additional Teacher, Teaching Assistant and Speech & Language Therapy time.

Aspects of the School Plan includes developing: hightec (laptop computers) and low tech communication aids, picture communication aids, multi sensory curriculum, drama for all, play therapy, advocacy, social language, inclusion, whole school reward days.

Our Community Plan is focused on 5 local partner schools, the child development centre, the respite unit and community facilities, such as the library, the leisure centre, banks and supermarkets.  In working with these we shall develop the communication skills and disability awareness of staff and raise the standards of communication, language and literacy for the most vulnerable learners.
